Health: You may be filling your stomach, but is your body getting complete nutrition? These mistakes could harm your health..

Improving one’s diet is the most essential step toward maintaining a healthy body. Everyone should pay attention to their diet from a young age. Health experts point out that the Indian diet is rich in foods that can easily provide the necessary nutrients.

An Indian meal typically consists of items like roti, rice, lentils (dal), vegetables, and salad. While such a meal may appear filling and balanced, does it actually provide the body with all the essential nutrients? Often, even when one feels full, the meal may lack sufficient amounts of protein, iron, vitamin B12, folate, or other micronutrients. This is generally not due to the food itself, but rather a lack of variety in one’s diet.

A Balanced Diet is Essential for Everyone

According to the dietary guidelines of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a balanced diet is necessary for people of all ages. It should include a variety of food groups, such as whole grains, lentils, vegetables, and fruits.

Simply feeling full after a meal does not guarantee that the body is receiving adequate protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. If a meal contains a large portion of roti or rice, but lacks sufficient lentils, vegetables, fruits, dairy (milk/yogurt), or other protein sources, it can lead to a long-term dietary imbalance.

The Risk of Protein Deficiency

Lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans (rajma), dairy products (milk/yogurt), and eggs are excellent sources of protein. Protein is vital for the body’s muscles, tissues, and various biological processes. If the daily diet lacks sufficient quantity or variety of these foods, meeting protein requirements can become difficult. It is entirely possible to obtain adequate protein from a vegetarian diet; this requires the regular inclusion of lentils, legumes, soy, dairy products, and other suitable protein sources.

Pay attention to iron and vitamin B12 as well.

Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, which causes issues such as fatigue, weakness, and a reduced capacity to perform tasks. Women may be at a higher risk for this.

Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal-based foods. Those who follow a strictly vegetarian or vegan diet may be at an increased risk of a deficiency.
A deficiency in vitamin B12 can raise the risk of various health problems, ranging from memory issues to complications affecting the nervous system.
Folate can be obtained from green leafy vegetables, lentils (pulses), and other food sources.

What should a nutrient-rich plate look like?
Health experts emphasize that instead of eating the same food every day, it is essential to have variety in your diet. Include lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, or other sources of protein in your meals.

Consume a variety of colorful vegetables and seasonal fruits.
Incorporate a diverse range of whole grains and millets.
Ensure you include dairy products like milk and yogurt, or other calcium-rich foods, as needed.
