How harmful is gel nail polish to the nails? What safety precautions should be taken while applying it?

Nail polish has long been used to give nails a beautiful, aesthetic look. Gel nail polish is a newer, viral variation of this trend that makes nails appear much shinier. However, is it safe for your health? It is crucial to know the answer. To find out, we spoke with Dr. Chandni Jain Gupta (MD, MBBS), a dermatologist and aesthetic physician at Alantis Healthcare in New Delhi. The expert explained that ultraviolet (UV) and LED lights are used to cure (dry) gel polish. Repeated exposure to these lights can lead to premature skin aging and UV-related skin damage.

Some people may also experience allergic reactions to gel products. Acrylates and methacrylates are the ingredients responsible for making the gel hard and adhesive. Individuals with high sensitivity to these substances can develop allergic contact dermatitis. Symptoms may include swelling, itching, burning sensations, or redness around the nails. In some cases, the allergic reaction can spread beyond the hands to other parts of the body that have come into contact with the allergen. Those who have previously had an allergic reaction to gel products should not use them without consulting a doctor.

**Do Not Ignore Nail Issues**
The expert advises that individuals with pre-existing nail problems should exercise extra caution. Those suffering from issues such as fungal or bacterial infections, abnormal nail discoloration, swelling, cuts, or open wounds should avoid using gel nail polish. People with thin or weak nails should also refrain from using gel polish. The Right Way to Remove Gel Polish
You should never peel, pull, or forcibly scrape off your manicure to remove gel polish. Instead, the gel should be soaked off using acetone in a controlled manner, followed by the gentle removal of the polish. If filing is necessary, it should be done carefully to avoid wearing down the natural nail excessively. It is also important to take a break from applying gel polish for a while to allow your nails time to recover and regrow.

Keep These Points in Mind
While there is no ban on using gel nails, this does not mean they are entirely risk-free. Those who opt for gel nails should limit the frequency of application, avoid excessive filing and removal processes, minimize unnecessary exposure to UV rays, keep their hands clean, and ensure their nails remain moisturized.
