Have you ever wondered what happens to your PF (Provident Fund) account after retirement? If not, this information is crucial for you. When someone retires or leaves their job prematurely, the PF account eventually becomes inactive. This raises the question: for how long does the money in an inactive account continue to earn interest? Let us understand the EPFO rules regarding this.

When does a PF account become inactive?
According to EPFO rules, an account is deemed inactive if no new contributions are made to it for three consecutive years following retirement or upon attaining the age of 55 (whichever occurs later). Additionally, an account becomes inactive if the account holder moves abroad.
What happens to the interest after retirement?
EPFO has specific rules for this. If you retire before the age of 55, your PF account continues to earn interest until you turn 58. After that, the account becomes inactive, and interest accrual stops. However, if you retire at or after the age of 55, your account continues to earn interest for three years post-retirement, after which it becomes inactive.
How can an inactive account be reactivated?
If you are between the ages of 55 and 58 and have not fully retired (for instance, you are freelancing or have returned to work after a break), you can reactivate your account in two ways:
Online method:
Link your UAN (Universal Account Number) to your active mobile number. Update your KYC details, including Aadhaar, bank account, and PAN card information.
Ask your current employer to deposit your monthly PF contribution into this existing PF account.
Offline method:
You can visit your nearest EPFO office and submit the claim form.
Once the process is complete, your inactive account will be reactivated.
