But his innings were so slow that the team started suffering losses and due to this, he was retired out with 12 balls to go.

Batting first, Punjab Kings had set a huge target of 220 runs in front of Chennai Super Kings. To chase this, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra came out to open. While chasing such a big score, both had the responsibility of giving a quick start. Together they scored 59 runs in the powerplay. During this, Rachin had scored 35 runs in 21 balls. At the same time, Conway was playing very slow and could score only 22 runs in 16 balls. Even going forward, he could not speed up his innings.

Despite playing 35 balls, Conway was able to score only 44 runs. At the same time, despite staying till the 18th, Conway scored only 69 runs in 49 balls, which suffered a loss for Chennai. Because of him, the pressure of the run rate kept increasing. Therefore, after the 5th ball of the 18th over, coach Stephen Fleming retired Conway and called him back. But by then the match had gone far away from Chennai. After his departure, CSK had to score 49 runs in 13 balls, in which they could score 30 runs and lost the match by 18 runs.

This happened for the fifth time in IPL.

Devon Conway is only the 5th batsman to be retired in the history of IPL. Earlier recently, Mumbai Indians had taken a similar decision against Lucknow Super Giants. Mumbai coach Mahela Jayawardene had called Tilak Verma back after retiring him out. Tilak Verma had batted slowly while chasing 204 runs and scored only 25 runs in 23 balls. Because of him, Mumbai lost the match by 12 runs. Before him, R Ashwin in 2022 and Atharva Taide and Sai Sudarshan in 2023 have also been out in this way.
