Krishna Janmashtami 2025: This year, the 5252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna will be celebrated. According to tradition, the combination of Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra is important for this festival, but this time Ashtami Tithi will prevail for two days, and Rohini Nakshatra is starting from the next morning, due to which there is confusion about the date of the fast.

Astrologer Pt. Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said that according to the Panchang calculation, Ashtami Tithi will start at 11:49 pm on August 15 and end at 9:34 pm on August 16. This is the reason why the general public is in a state of confusion on Shri Krishna Janmashtami.

When is Ashtami Tithi?

On August 15, the Tithi starts from midnight itself, whereas Shri Krishna was born in the middle of the Ashtami Tithi. If Ashtami prevails at midnight on both days, then Janmashtami fast and worship are done on the second day. According to this, only the Ashtami of Udaya Tithi is valid. In this fast, after fasting and worship on Ashtami, the fast is completed by Parana on Navami. That is, Parana will be on the 17th morning. Therefore, Ashtami on 16th August is valid. According to Vaishnavism, Ashtami will be on 16th August.

According to the scriptures, the date that is in midnight is more valid. But according to the classical principle, if Ashtami is Saptami Vidya (combined), then it is completely discardable.

Auspicious time for worship

Since Ashtami Saptami Vidya (combined) on 15th August, it is completely discardable according to the scriptures. On the other hand, the Ashtami Tithi on 16th August is Navami Vidya (combined), which is acceptable according to the scriptures. Therefore, it will be better for all Smarta and Vaishnava devotees to celebrate Shri Krishna Janmashtami on 16th August 2025 only. The best time for Puja is from 12:04 am to 12:47 am on August 16, which is called Nishith Kaal and is considered to be the actual moment of Shri Krishna's birth.

Rohini Nakshatra and Parana

Rohini Nakshatra is also given great importance in the Vaishnav tradition. This time Rohini Nakshatra will start from 4:38 am on August 17 and will remain till 3:17 am on August 18. Therefore, Vaishnav devotees will perform Puja on the night of August 16 and will break their fast after sunrise on August 17. Whereas, in the Smarta tradition, the decision is taken on the basis of the presence of Ashtami at sunrise, so the Smarta tradition will observe fast on the same day and break it on the night of August 16.
