What to Do If Your Baby Is Coughing: Coughs and colds are extremely common among young children during seasonal transitions. Since infants have a weaker immune system, they are more susceptible to infections. Consequently, this period can be quite challenging for parents, who often struggle to figure out how to provide relief to their little ones suffering from a cough.

It is important to understand that a cough is not, in itself, a disease; rather, it is the body's natural defense mechanism. However, if it persists for an extended period, it can weaken the child. Here, we outline safe home remedies that can be employed to alleviate a child's cough. Let's explore some effective and reliable methods to bring relief to your little ones during this discomfort.
What to Feed and What to Avoid?
When a child has a cough, they may experience irritation and inflammation in the throat. In such instances, maintaining a proper diet is crucial. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, if your child is under six months of age, you should feed them exclusively—and only—breast milk. The natural antibodies present in breast milk empower the child to fight off infections.
For children over six months of age, hydration is paramount. Keep giving them small sips of lukewarm water throughout the day. For meals, offer them light and warm foods, such as thin *moong dal* khichdi or lentil broth (*dal ka paani*). During a cough, you should avoid giving the child bananas, yogurt, cold fruits, or refrigerated milk, as these items can thicken mucus and exacerbate throat irritation.
Effective Home Remedies for Cough Relief:
Home remedies have long been regarded as both effective and safe for young children. One of the oldest and most potent methods is a massage using mustard oil. Warm a small amount of mustard oil infused with two cloves of garlic and a pinch of carom seeds (*ajwain*). Once the oil has cooled to a lukewarm temperature, gently massage it onto the child's chest, back, and the soles of their feet. This oil generates warmth within the child's body and helps alleviate congestion.
Additionally, steam therapy is an excellent remedy. If the child is too young to inhale steam directly, turn on the hot water tap in the bathroom to fill the room with steam, and sit there holding the child in your arms for 10–15 minutes. This helps clear a blocked nose. For children over the age of one, you can also administer half a teaspoon of honey mixed with a pinch of ginger juice—a remedy that works nothing short of magic for a sore throat.

When is it essential to see a doctor?
We often rely solely on home remedies, but it is crucial to know exactly when to seek professional medical help. If your child's cough persists, causes significant distress, or has lasted for more than a week, do not ignore it.
If the cough is accompanied by a high fever (exceeding 102°F), if you hear a wheezing sound while the child breathes, or if their ribs appear to retract inward during inhalation, these could be signs of pneumonia or a serious infection. Furthermore, if the child refuses to feed, appears excessively lethargic, or if their lips begin to turn blue, contact a local pediatrician immediately without a moment's delay.
