In Hinduism, the festival of Makar Sankranti is considered extremely sacred and auspicious. This festival is celebrated every year in the month of Paush and begins when the sun moves from Sagittarius to Capricorn. According to astrology, this is the moment when the sun begins its northward journey (Uttarayana). This northward journey of the sun is considered a symbol of positive energy, auspicious deeds, and new beginnings.

For this reason, Makar Sankranti holds special religious and astrological significance. According to religious beliefs, the day of Makar Sankranti is an opportunity for worshipping the Sun God and for self-purification. Worshipping Surya Narayan and Lord Vishnu on this day brings health, happiness, prosperity, and good fortune in life.
What the Astrologer of Deoghar Says
According to the renowned astrologer Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal of Deoghar, this year the festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on January 14th. He says that this day is not only excellent for accumulating merit, but it is also considered extremely fruitful for pleasing ancestors and getting rid of ancestral curses (Pitru Dosha). On the day of Sankranti, the Sun God enters the zodiac sign of Capricorn, which is ruled by his son, Saturn. This conjunction is especially auspicious for the removal of ancestral curses.
On this day, after taking a bath in the Ganges or any other holy river in the morning, offering three handfuls of water (tarpan) to the ancestors with black sesame seeds and white flowers, while reciting their names and lineage, pleases the ancestors. This frees one from ancestral curses and brings peace and harmony to the family.
A Special Auspicious Conjunction is Forming
The astrologer says that according to the Rishikesh Panchang, a wonderfully auspicious conjunction is forming on the day of Makar Sankranti this year. Along with Sankranti, Ekadashi also falls on the same day this year. In addition, auspicious yogas like Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga and Amrit Siddhi Yoga are also forming on that day, which further increases its significance.
One can also get rid of ancestral curses through charity.
Makar Sankranti is also called 'Til Sankranti'. According to religious stories, sesame seeds are believed to have originated from the body of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, it has special religious significance. On this day, donating black sesame seeds and jaggery is considered highly auspicious. Donating sesame seed ladoos, raw sesame seeds, or other sesame-based items to the needy or Brahmins is believed to reduce the influence of negative forces and remove obstacles in life.

The festival of Makar Sankranti conveys the message of bringing new energy, hope, and positive changes into life through sun worship, charity, and offerings to ancestors. This is why this festival is considered a symbol of faith, belief, and well-being in Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism).
