Makar Sankranti: The rewards of bathing and giving charity will be multiplied many times over due to Shatila Ekadashi..

In Sanatan Dharma, the festival of Makar Sankranti holds special significance. According to religious beliefs, this day marks the beginning of auspicious activities. Makar Sankranti in 2026 is going to be even more special, as this time, the rare and highly auspicious conjunction of the Sun's entry into Capricorn coincides with Shatila Ekadashi. According to astrology, this conjunction, associated with both Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Lord Vishnu, is rarely seen. When the blessings of both deities are received on the same day, the benefits of bathing, charity, and worship are multiplied manifold.

Ayodhya-based astrologer Pandit Kalki Ram explains that according to the Panchang (Hindu calendar), Shatila Ekadashi falls on January 14, 2026, and on the same night, the Sun will enter Capricorn. The Ekadashi tithi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, while Sankranti is associated with Lord Surya. Therefore, bathing in holy rivers and performing acts of charity and merit during this auspicious conjunction is considered highly significant. Using sesame seeds on this day is believed to grant liberation from sins and salvation to ancestors.

Auspicious Time for Bathing on Makar Sankranti
Pandit Kalki Ram explains that different auspicious times are prescribed for bathing on Makar Sankranti. If one wishes to bathe before sunrise, the time between 5:27 AM and 6:21 AM is considered optimal. The Mahapunya Kaal (most auspicious time) for bathing will be from 3:13 PM to 4:58 PM. Additionally, the Punya Kaal (auspicious time) is considered to be from 3:13 PM to 5:44 PM. Bathing in holy rivers and performing acts of charity during these times is believed to bestow inexhaustible merit.

Special Significance of Charity and Meritorious Deeds on Makar Sankranti
Charity and meritorious deeds hold special significance on Makar Sankranti. Donating sesame seeds and jaggery on this day is believed to alleviate afflictions related to Saturn and the Sun. Donating khichdi (a rice and lentil dish) to the poor and needy is also considered highly auspicious. Considering the cold weather, donating blankets is considered a virtuous act and is believed to bring good fortune.

Makar Sankranti Puja Rituals
On the day of Makar Sankranti, one should wake up during the Brahma Muhurta (auspicious time before sunrise) and bathe with a mixture of black sesame seeds and Ganges water. If possible, bathing in holy rivers is considered especially fruitful. After this, one should perform the ritualistic worship of Lord Surya (Sun God). Offer sesame seed ladoos to Lord Vishnu and finally, consume khichdi (a rice and lentil dish). It is believed that performing the puja in this manner removes life's troubles and brings blessings of happiness and prosperity.
