National Pollution Control Day 2025: National Pollution Control Day is celebrated across the country every year on December 2nd. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the harm caused by pollution. Air pollution has been wreaking havoc in Delhi-NCR for several days. While air pollution levels had slightly decreased over the past few days, the AQI has now again exceeded 400 in many areas.

Even in this situation, the concentration of fine particles (PM2.5) in the air is still so high that it can pose a serious health risk. Prolonged exposure to this 'toxic' air multiplies the risk of respiratory diseases, asthma attacks, and cardiovascular problems.
In this harsh environment, people often become careless, thinking that the danger has passed, but in reality, some of our everyday habits significantly increase the risk of serious diseases. Ignoring these habits can cause permanent damage to the lungs, heart, and blood vessels. Therefore, experts advise taking certain precautions in an environment with an AQI of 400.
Going out without a mask
Going out without an N95 or N99 mask when the AQI is 400+ is the biggest mistake. PM2.5 particles are so small that they easily pass through the lungs' natural filter. Masks effectively filter these dangerous microscopic particles. Without a mask, these toxic particles enter the bloodstream, damaging blood vessels and increasing inflammation.
Exercising outdoors in high pollution
Going for a morning walk or exercising outdoors in high AQI conditions is tantamount to poisoning your health. The increased breathing rate and depth during exercise increase the amount of pollutants reaching your lungs many times over. This polluted air directly puts additional strain on the heart and increases the risk of an asthma attack or heart attack.
Smoking or burning something indoors
Things that increase indoor pollution levels, such as incense sticks, agarbatti, mosquito coils, or smoking, produce toxic smoke. These particles accumulate rapidly in closed rooms and enter the bloodstream through the respiratory system. Use an air purifier to keep indoor air clean.

Less Water and Dehydration
Drinking less water in winter because you feel less thirsty is another big mistake. Dehydration dries out the mucous membranes lining the respiratory tract. Dry mucous membranes are less effective at filtering pollutants and viruses, leading to increased infections and respiratory problems. Therefore, make sure to drink at least 7-8 glasses of water throughout the day.
