ORS: What is it about ORS that improves the body's hydration? When and how should it be consumed?

How to Use ORS Correctly: Water depletion in the body is a common issue during the summer season. Most people fall victim to dehydration at some point in their lives. To replenish lost fluids, many people drink copious amounts of water, yet their hydration levels often fail to improve. In reality, along with water, essential salts are also expelled from the body through sweat, thereby disrupting the electrolyte balance. In such conditions, Oral Rehydration Solution—or ORS—acts as a life-saving remedy. During the summer, when weakness sets in due to heatstroke, diarrhea, or vomiting, ORS serves as the most affordable and simple method to restore the body's electrolyte balance. Certified by the World Health Organization (WHO), this solution revitalizes the body's cells.

Dr. Anil Bansal, former President of the Delhi Medical Association and a senior physician, told News18 that ORS primarily consists of a precise blend of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium citrate, and glucose. The science behind ORS lies in the sodium-glucose co-transport mechanism. Under normal circumstances, it is difficult for the intestines to absorb sodium; however, when glucose is present, it effectively "pulls" the sodium along with it into the bloodstream. Along with sodium, water is also rapidly absorbed by the intestinal walls, allowing a dehydrated body to become rehydrated in a very short span of time. This provides relief to individuals and restores their hydration status.

Dr. Bansal explained that the potassium present in ORS is essential for maintaining the normal functioning of muscles and the heart—minerals that are often lost from the body due to diarrhea or excessive sweating. Sodium citrate helps balance the body's acidity levels, which can rise during periods of dehydration. It is this precise scientific balance that makes ORS far more potent and effective than mere water mixed with salt and sugar. It accurately restores the body's electrolyte equilibrium. According to experts, consuming ORS becomes essential when symptoms of dehydration manifest in the body. If you are experiencing frequent bouts of diarrhea, persistent vomiting, or excessive sweating and dizziness due to heat exposure, you should begin taking ORS.

Furthermore, if you notice reduced urination, a dry mouth, or a sense of lethargy, these are indications that your body requires immediate replenishment of electrolytes. In the case of children, if they appear less active or do not shed tears while crying, ORS should be administered under a doctor's guidance.

According to medical professionals, to derive the maximum benefits from ORS, it is crucial to prepare it using the correct method. Always dissolve a single packet of commercially available ORS in exactly one liter of drinking water that has been boiled and subsequently cooled. Using a quantity of water that is either too low or too high can disrupt the solution's electrolyte balance. Once prepared, this solution should be consumed within 24 hours; any remaining solution should be discarded thereafter. It should be consumed slowly, sip by sip, to allow the intestines sufficient time to absorb it. It is important to remember not to add extra sugar, honey, or fruit juice to the ORS, as doing so may compromise its effectiveness.
