Parenting Tips: Many children sleep with their mouths open, or rather, their mouths remain open while they sleep. Now, most parents consider this normal, while some parents ignore it, thinking it's an innocent habit or a cute behavior. If you are one of these parents, then this article is for you. This seemingly cute habit can be very harmful to your child. Dentist Richa Jain shared a video about this on her Instagram handle. In the video, the doctor explains that breathing through the mouth while sleeping can cause several problems for the child.

Let's learn more about this:
What does the dentist say?
Dr. Richa explains that if your child often breathes through their mouth while sleeping, don't take it lightly. Breathing through the nose is the most natural and healthy way for the body. When a child starts breathing through their mouth instead of their nose, it affects the development of their face, jaw, and teeth. Prolonged mouth breathing can prevent the jaw structure from developing properly. This can lead to crooked or crowded teeth later on.
The dentist further says that sleeping with the mouth open also affects the quality of the child's sleep. Such children don't get deep sleep, which can make them feel tired throughout the day. This also affects their studies and concentration. Sometimes children appear irritable or lethargic, and parents don't understand the real reason behind it.
In addition, mouth breathing causes dryness in the mouth, which allows bacteria to multiply rapidly. This leads to bad breath in the child, and also increases the risk of cavities. Due to the lack of saliva, the natural protection of the teeth is also reduced.
Therefore, if your child breathes through their mouth while sleeping, snores, or drools excessively, consider it a warning sign. This could be due to nasal problems, allergies, enlarged tonsils, or incorrect tooth positioning.
How can this habit be broken?
The dentist says that the good news is that if addressed in time, this problem can be corrected. If your child sleeps with their mouth open, take them to a dentist or a pediatric dental expert. They will be able to tell you the real reason behind it, after which the correct treatment can be started.
