Google has introduced a new feature for Android that allows users to transfer passwords and passkeys between compatible password managers without needing to export their credentials to a separate file. The entire transfer process is handled directly by the Android operating system and is designed to simplify the experience of switching password managers. It also enables the transfer of passkeys between supported services, addressing a major limitation of previous transfer methods. This feature is currently available with four password management services, with more expected to be added in the future.

Easier Password and Passkey Transfers on Android: How It Works
According to a Google blog post, users previously had to export passwords as unencrypted text files when switching between password managers. This created a risk of credentials being exposed on the device during the transfer. Since passkeys could not be transferred this way, users had to set them up again on supported websites and apps after switching password managers.

The transfer process begins within the password manager the user wishes to switch to. After selecting the option to import or copy credentials from another provider, the app sends a request to Android. The operating system then detects the password managers installed on the device and displays those that can serve as the source.

Users can select their old password manager to proceed. Android then opens the selected app, allowing users to review the credentials chosen for migration and authorize the transfer. Once approved, Android securely transfers the passwords and passkeys to the new password manager. Google states that the entire process takes just a few seconds.

How to Transfer Passwords and Passkeys on Android? 

Users can follow these simple steps to transfer their credentials between compatible password managers:

Open the password manager you wish to switch to and select the option to import or copy credentials from another provider.
Grant the app permission to hand over the transfer process to Android.
Select your old password manager from the list of compatible providers displayed by Android.

Go to your current password manager and review the credentials selected for transfer.
Authorize the transfer within your current password manager.
Android will then securely move the selected passwords and passkeys to the new password manager.

Google Password Manager also supports this new transfer system. Users can import passwords from other password managers via this new flow, and the service also allows for the export of stored passwords.

This feature is currently available on Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. Google states that other password manager providers will also add support for this system in the future.
