According to the Hindu calendar, the *Shradh Paksha* (fortnight dedicated to ancestors) begins annually on the *Pratipada* (first day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) in the month of *Ashwin* and concludes after 15 days on *Amavasya* (new moon day). It is believed that during this period, the souls of ancestors visit the earthly realm. Consequently, rituals such as *Tarpan*, *Shradh*, and *Pind Daan* are performed to express reverence towards them and seek their blessings. These rituals appease the ancestors, who in turn bless the family with happiness, prosperity, and peace.

When will Pitru Paksha 2026 begin?
According to astrological calculations, the month of *Ashwin* begins after the full moon (*Purnima*) of the *Bhadrapada* month. In 2026, the *Pratipada* date of the *Ashwin Krishna Paksha* will commence at 10:18 PM on September 26. The period will conclude on October 10, 2026, on the day of *Sarvapitri Amavasya*.

Method of Performing Tarpan

One should perform Tarpan by mixing black sesame seeds in the water, holding *Kusha* grass in hand, and remembering the ancestors with reverence.
Donating food, clothing, and other items, as well as feeding Brahmins after the Tarpan ritual, is also considered highly meritorious. This ensures the continued blessings of the ancestors and maintains an atmosphere of peace and happiness in the home.
