Planning to go on the Kanwar Yatra during Sawan? Pack these 10 essential items in your bag before leaving home..

Kanwar Yatra 2026: With the onset of the holy month of Sawan, the Kanwar Yatra has commenced across the country. Every year, lakhs of Shiva devotees undertake a pilgrimage on foot to Haridwar, Gangotri, Gaumukh, and other sacred ghats to fetch water from the Ganges. If you are preparing to embark on the Kanwar Yatra this time, make sure to check a few essential items before leaving home. Do not step out without these 10 items when packing your bag for the journey; they will ensure your trip is safe and comfortable.

1. Don't forget to carry an identity card
Keep your Aadhaar card, driving license, or any government-issued ID card with you. Also, keep a photocopy in your bag to avoid any inconvenience if the need arises.

2. Carry medicines and a first-aid kit
If you are on medication for any condition, carry a sufficient supply for the entire journey. Ensure your bag contains essentials like bandages, antiseptic cream, cotton, ORS, and blister patches.

3. Carry a waterproof bag and a raincoat
It can rain at any time during Sawan. Therefore, carry a waterproof bag, raincoat, or poncho to keep your clothes, medicines, and essential items safe.

4. Keep your mobile phone safe
Store your mobile phone in a waterproof pouch. Also, carry a fully charged power bank, a charging cable, and—if necessary—download offline maps.

5. Carry water and light snacks
While *Bhandaras* (community kitchens) are available along the route, do not rely on them entirely. Carry a water bottle and light snacks such as roasted chickpeas (*bhuna chana*), fox nuts (*makhana*), dry fruits, or energy bars.

6. Pack extra clothes and socks
Clothes and socks can get wet in the rain. Carry an extra set of clothes, two or three pairs of cotton socks, and an extra pair of slippers if needed.

7. Keep emergency contact details handy
Write down your name, address, blood group, details of any medical conditions, and the mobile numbers of two family members on a small slip of paper or in a diary. This information will prove useful even if your mobile phone is switched off.

8. Carry a torch and reflective tape
If you have to travel at night, a small torch and reflective tape will enhance your safety. These make it easier for other vehicles to spot you.

9. Carry a *Kanwar* stand and extra rope
Keep a stand and extra rope with you to keep the *Kanwar* secure during the journey. This allows you to safely secure the *Kanwar* whenever necessary.

10. Familiarize yourself with the route beforehand
Before setting out, gather information about the travel route, medical camps, rest areas, and *Bhandaras* (community food distribution points). Follow the advisories issued by the police and administration, and remain alert in crowded areas.

It is worth noting that the *Kanwar Yatra* is not merely a journey of faith but also one of discipline and responsibility. With proper preparation, a light bag, and essential items, you can make your journey safer, easier, and more pleasant.
