Still can't get the odor out of your quilts and blankets even after drying them in the sun? Here are some easy methods..

Preparations for the winter season begin well before it actually arrives. Blankets, quilts, and warm clothing are taken out of storage. We often assume that simply airing them out in the sun will eliminate any unpleasant odors; however, a musty, damp smell often persists.

If you are also struggling with this issue, here are some effective ways to remove unpleasant smells from your blankets and quilts.

Tips for removing odors from blankets and quilts without washing:
There are several methods to freshen up your blankets and quilts without needing to wash them. Simply follow the steps outlined below:

Shake out the blankets and quilts:
Start by taking the blankets and quilts out of storage and shaking them thoroughly. Once the dust has been removed, spread them out—ideally on a terrace or rooftop—and let them air out in the sun for at least 3–4 days. This will help eliminate any musty or damp odors.

Baking soda:
Baking soda is highly effective for neutralizing odors. Spread out your blanket or quilt and use a sieve to sprinkle 3–4 tablespoons of baking soda over it. Leave it on for 20–30 minutes; the baking soda will absorb both moisture and unpleasant smells.

White vinegar and water:
Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a small spray bottle. Lightly mist the mixture over your blankets and quilts, then leave them out in the open air to dry. You will find that the unpleasant odors have completely disappeared.

Camphor and essential oils:
Crush camphor tablets into a fine powder, place the powder into small cotton pouches, and tuck these pouches into your blankets and quilts for 5–6 hours. After this, fill a small spray bottle with essential oil and lightly mist the items.

Lemon juice
Using lemon juice is an easy and effective method. Simply squeeze an entire lemon into half a glass of warm water. Once mixed well, pour the solution into a spray bottle. Lightly mist your quilts and blankets with this mixture. It is worth noting that the anti-bacterial properties of lemon help eliminate unpleasant odors and also assist in removing any fungus from the fabric.
