Greater Kailash resident Sumit Nanda is troubled by his son Rohit's habit of constantly being on the smartphone. A notification sound distracts him. It is his habit to reply to every comment and keep count of likes on his photos. Like Sumit, many parents are worried that their children may get into trouble due to internet media. The web series 'Adolescence' shown on Netflix is also seen talking about the turmoil in the life of a teenager and his family due to internet media.
This series is being discussed all around for raising many issues like the state of mind of adolescents, insecurity, cyberbullying, and ill effects of internet media. Today, in the era of the internet and internet media, children, irrespective of which country they belong to, are in the same boat. You do not even know when the computer in their study room becomes the reason for their entry into the world of porn, fraud, cyberbullying or crime, or mental illnesses like depression, and anxiety.
This behavior is dangerous.
Adolescence is the age when children between 10 and 19 years (according to WHO) have to go through many external and internal changes in their lives. Today, anger and loneliness have increased in children who are constantly connected to smartphones. Children are constantly connected with their school and college friends apart from college assignments, which leads to cyber bullying now and then.
Children hesitate to tell their parents everything. In such a situation, if you see a change in the behavior of the child, find signs of anger, stammering, or fear in them while talking about friends, if there are injury marks on the body of children returning from school or hear conversations like hitting or hurting a classmate in anger, then this is a danger signal. A trend is seen in children of this age, especially boys, where they move towards toxic masculinity in the name of becoming strong. In the race to become an 'alpha male' or when boys are growing up, they are prepared by telling them things like 'tough', 'be a man', and 'boys don't cry'. In such a situation, many times they take any prohibition as ego and commit a crime in a fit of anger.
Things will be resolved by talking.
It is difficult to separate children from smartphones but explain to them that despite having smartphones, they can achieve their goals without getting distracted. Explain to them that 'being on the smartphone instead of eating or sleeping is harming their own life'. While talking to them, listen to them as much as possible. They too get worried about things like studies, friends, classmates, and their physical condition. Your critical attitude on everything prevents them from expressing their state of mind to you. In such a situation, it grows inside them, which later comes out by harming themselves or sometimes a close friend or classmate. By then the situation gets out of hand.
This is how a teen account will save you.
Australia has banned internet media for children below 16 years of age. Many other countries are also considering this. In the same sequence, Instagram's teen accounts that have come up will not have any interaction with unwanted people, parents will be able to keep an eye on the children's accounts and activities. Sleep mode will be activated automatically from 10 pm to 7 am. During this time, notifications and DM replies will also be turned off.
