Digital payments in India have grown rapidly over the past few years, with millions of users relying on UPI for everyday transactions. Whether it’s buying groceries, paying at a local shop, or ordering street food, UPI-based apps have become the preferred payment method for many people.
However, entering a UPI PIN for every small transaction can sometimes feel inconvenient, especially when making quick payments of small amounts. To address this issue, the National Payments Corporation of India introduced UPI Lite, a feature designed to simplify low-value payments.
UPI Lite allows users to make smaller payments instantly without entering a PIN every time. It works like an on-device wallet inside popular apps such as Paytm, Google Pay, and BHIM. Once enabled, UPI Lite lets users pay quickly for small purchases while maintaining secure and seamless transactions.
Below is a detailed guide explaining how UPI Lite works and how you can enable PIN-free payments on supported UPI apps.
What Is UPI Lite?
UPI Lite is a feature that enables quick payments directly from a small wallet stored within the UPI app. Instead of verifying each payment with a PIN, the transaction is processed instantly if the payment amount is within the permitted limit.
The main goal of UPI Lite is to make everyday payments faster and reduce the load on banking systems for small-value transactions.
Once activated, UPI Lite becomes the default option for payments up to ₹200, meaning these transactions can be completed instantly without entering a PIN.
UPI Lite Transaction Limits
There are specific limits for using UPI Lite:
- Maximum payment per transaction: ₹200
- Maximum balance that can be added at a time: ₹2,000
- Users can add money twice per day, allowing a daily usage limit of ₹4,000
- No extra transaction charges are applied
Another benefit is that smaller payments made through UPI Lite may not appear individually in your bank statement, making the process faster and more efficient.
Banks Supporting UPI Lite
Several banks in India currently support UPI Lite, including:
- AU Small Finance Bank
- Axis Bank
- Bank of India
- ICICI Bank
- Indian Bank
- Kotak Mahindra Bank
- State Bank of India
- South Indian Bank
- Union Bank of India
If your bank is on the supported list, you can enable UPI Lite through compatible UPI apps.
