According to religious belief, Lord Rama was victorious over Ravana only after seeing the Neelkanth bird on Dussehra.

The tradition of seeing the Neelkanth bird on this festival has been going on for years. It is also said that when Lord Rama returned after killing Ravana, he was accused of the sin of brahminicide. After his sins, he and Lakshmana worshipped Lord Shiva, and Shiva, pleased with him, appeared to Lord Rama and Lakshman in the form of the Neelkanth bird. Therefore, seeing the Neelkanth bird on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra is considered very auspicious.
