When should the *Rakhi* be removed?

There is no fixed date or time prescribed for removing the *Rakhi* after Raksha Bandhan. It is commonly believed that it can be removed about 24 hours after being tied on the wrist. However, different regions follow different traditions regarding this.

In some families, there is a tradition of removing the old *Rakhi* on the occasion of Janmashtami. Meanwhile, many brothers keep the *Rakhi* tied on their wrists throughout the year and replace the old one with a new *Rakhi* only on the next Raksha Bandhan.

What should be done after removing the *Rakhi*?

One should avoid throwing the *Rakhi* on the street, in a trash bin, or in any random place after removing it. According to religious beliefs, it is better to dispose of the old *Raksha Sutra* (sacred thread) respectfully.

You may choose to tie the *Rakhi* to the branch of a tree. In some places, there is a tradition of placing a one-rupee coin alongside it while doing so. In this way, instead of being discarded carelessly, the *Rakhi* can be bid farewell with reverence.
