Why are green vegetables avoided during the month of Sawan? Here is the reason behind this centuries-old belief..

The month of Sawan is considered extremely sacred in Hinduism. During this period, along with the worship of Lord Shiva, various rules and traditions are observed. One such tradition is abstaining from consuming green leafy vegetables during Sawan. Even today, in many households, the consumption of spinach, fenugreek (methi), bathua, and other green leafy vegetables is reduced during this month. But is there merely a religious belief behind this, or is there a scientific reason as well?

In Hindu traditions, Sawan is regarded as a month of restraint and a *sattvic* (pure and wholesome) lifestyle. It is believed that one should prioritize purity and wholesomeness in one's diet during this time. According to various religious beliefs, greenery flourishes on earth during Sawan, and plant life is highly active; consequently, some people refrain from eating green leafy vegetables. Certain beliefs also suggest that the population of insects and small creatures increases during Sawan. Since small insects or microorganisms can hide within leafy vegetables, it was advised to avoid consuming them.

What is the scientific reason?
Humidity levels rise during the monsoon season, which can lead to increased activity of bacteria, fungi, and small insects. Green leafy vegetables grow close to the ground, and soil, insects, or microorganisms can easily adhere to their leaves. If they are not cleaned thoroughly, they can cause digestive issues.

The digestive system can also become somewhat sluggish during this season. In a high-humidity environment, the body may struggle to digest food; therefore, in the past, it was recommended to consume light and easily digestible meals.

Are green vegetables entirely harmful?
Scientifically, green leafy vegetables are rich in nutrients. They contain fiber, iron, vitamins, and various essential minerals that are beneficial for the body. Therefore, they cannot be considered entirely harmful. If you wish to consume green vegetables during the month of Sawan, it is essential to wash, clean, and cook them properly. Vegetables brought from the market should be washed thoroughly with clean water several times before use.
