Why is Garba performed in a circular formation? The story behind this famous folk dance of Gujarat is linked to the worship of Shakti..

The moment Gujarat is mentioned, the first word that comes to mind is 'Garba'. It is a traditional folk dance of Gujarat that has gained recognition both within the country and abroad. As soon as a Garba song begins, feet instinctively start tapping to the rhythm.

During the auspicious occasion of Navratri, Garba has transcended Gujarat's borders to reach various parts of the country; but do you know how this dance originated and what makes it unique? Let us explore the story of Garba.

How did Garba originate?
The word 'Garba' is derived from 'Garbh' (womb). Traditionally, an earthen pot—featuring small perforations and a lit lamp inside—is placed at the center of the dance. This pot is known as 'Garbo', and the dance is performed by moving in circles around it.

The lamp burning inside the pot is believed to symbolize life, while dancing around it signifies the worship of *Shakti* (divine feminine energy). Performing Garba around this lamp is considered an act of worshipping nature and the nine forms of *Shakti*. Garba is performed to worship Goddess Amba, who is considered the foundation of the universe.

What makes Garba special?
From a distance, Garba might appear to be an ordinary dance form, but it is special in many ways. Garba is always performed in groups; community members gather to dance in unison, coordinating their steps and rhythm.

The dance features a magnificent blend of rhythmic footwork, hand movements, and swirling motions. Participants move in a circle, clapping and synchronizing their steps. Generally, no specific musical instruments are required; the clapping of hands, snapping of fingers, and the movement of feet constitute the true essence of this dance.

It begins at a slow pace, with the dancers gradually picking up speed. *Dandiya* sticks are also used in Garba; striking them against one another creates a melodious sound within the group.

What is the attire like?
The attire for Garba is quite distinctive. Women wear colorful *chaniya-cholis*. These outfits feature vibrant colors and are beautifully embellished with mirror work, cowrie shells, and *gota-patti* work. They are paired with an *odhni* (scarf) and oxidized or silver jewelry.

Meanwhile, men wear a *kediyu* and *dhoti* for Garba. The *kediyu* is a flared kurta featuring embroidery and mirror work. They complement this look with a colorful Gujarati turban and oxidized jewelry.
