The festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated with great enthusiasm during the month of Sawan. On this occasion, it is customary to worship the Serpent Deity (Nag Devta). According to religious belief, offering milk to the Serpent Deity alleviates all sorrows in life and invokes the blessings of both the Serpent Deity and Lord Mahadev.

The scriptures outline specific rules associated with Nag Panchami. One such rule is to avoid using needles, threads, and sharp objects. It is believed that engaging in these prohibited activities can expose a person to *Sarpa Dosha* (serpent affliction) or the negative influence of the planets Rahu and Ketu. You might be wondering why the use of needles and threads is forbidden on this day. Let us explore the reasons behind this, as explained by Shri Chandresh Sharma of Astropatri.
**Do Not Use Needles or Threads**
Using needles, threads, scissors, or any sewing-related tools is strictly prohibited on Nag Panchami.
**Connection with Rahu and Ketu**
From an astrological perspective, the needle symbolizes sharpness and piercing, which is directly linked to the influence of the planets Rahu and Ketu:
* **Belief Regarding Injury to the Serpent Deity:** It is believed that using a needle or sewing cloth on this day causes injury to the hood of the Serpent Deity, potentially inviting *Sarpa Dosha* or the adverse effects of Rahu and Ketu upon the family.
* **Observance of Peace and Worship:** Instead of engaging in activities that involve piercing, the day is dedicated to peace, non-violence, and worship.
**Recommended Remedies**
Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" or the "Mahamrityunjaya Mantra" during worship on Nag Panchami. Additionally, one may chant the *Beej Mantras* (seed mantras) of Rahu and Ketu. Religious belief holds that performing these rituals with a sincere heart dispels the inauspicious effects of Rahu and Ketu, ushering happiness into one's life.
Performing *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) of Lord Mahadev with water mixed with red flowers and red sandalwood paste on this day is considered highly auspicious. According to religious beliefs, performing this remedy helps liberate one from the negative influences of Rahu and Ketu and yields auspicious results.

Additionally, donating items such as food and money at temples or to the needy is considered beneficial. While making a donation, one should not harbor ill thoughts about anyone; doing so prevents one from reaping the spiritual merit of the act.
