Our scriptures mention various practices that remain valid to this day. In Hinduism, specific rules govern everything from dining to performing rituals, and these are observed with great respect.

One such rule dictates that using the left hand while worshipping in a temple or eating is avoided; instead, using only the right hand is considered auspicious.

It is said that the left hand should be reserved for routine personal hygiene tasks, whereas the right hand should be used for activities involving respect towards others. Consequently, the right hand is preferred not only for worship but also for acts of charity and meritorious deeds. Let us explore the reasons behind this.

Why is the right hand used for auspicious activities?
Many of you may have wondered why the right hand is always employed for virtuous tasks. In reality, this practice is deeply rooted in ancient yogic energy concepts and religious notions of purity.

Historically, tasks were divided such that the left hand was used for household cleaning or daily personal routines. Conversely, the right hand was used for eating and worship; the latter practice ensured that purity and reverence for the Divine were maintained during rituals.

Why is the right side of the body considered sacred?
According to Ayurveda, the right side of the body represents the 'Pingala Nadi,' or solar energy. It is considered to be more active and dynamic.

Since worshipping God is a way of outwardly expressing devotion, the right hand—associated with solar energy—is deemed the best medium to channel and project that energy.

Furthermore, the Sanskrit word for the right side is 'Dakshina,' which symbolizes auspiciousness and respect. This is why we offer oblations to God and receive blessings using the right hand. Similarly, performing *Aarti* (ritual of light) and giving alms with the right hand is considered auspicious, as it demonstrates reverence for the Divine. For these very reasons, using the right hand—whether during worship rituals or any auspicious task—is still considered auspicious and fruitful.
