World First Aid Day 2026: In situations involving sudden injuries, burns, cuts, or a person fainting—whether at home, the office, or on the road—the initial few minutes can be crucial. However, due to a lack of knowledge, people often resort to home remedies that can worsen the injury instead of helping.

Always remember that the goal of first aid is to provide immediate relief and prevent the condition from deteriorating, not to provide complete medical treatment at home. Therefore, it is essential to understand what immediate actions to take for specific injuries and which methods could cause harm.
Is it right to pour cold water immediately on a burn?
In the event of a burn, first move the person to a safe location away from the source of fire or heat. Next, it is recommended to hold the burned area under normal running water for about 20 minutes. Extremely cold water or ice should not be applied directly to the skin, as this can cause further damage. If clothing has stuck to the skin, do not try to pull it off forcefully; it is better to have a doctor remove any material adhering to the burn.
What mistakes should be avoided in first aid?
1. Do not apply ice to burns
Many people apply ice or very cold water immediately after a burn. While this may provide a temporary cooling sensation, applying ice directly can damage the skin.
2. Avoid applying toothpaste or ghee
Home remedies suggesting the application of toothpaste, ghee, oil, or butter on burns are quite common. However, these are not part of proper medical first aid. They can make it difficult to keep the burn clean and may complicate subsequent medical examinations.
3. Do not pop blisters yourself
Blisters may form on the skin after a burn. Popping them yourself can increase the risk of infection. It is better to keep the blister intact and consult a doctor if necessary.
When should you immediately visit a doctor or hospital?
Not every injury can be treated with first aid at home. If the burn is deep; affects the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints; covers a large area of the body; or causes breathing difficulties, immediate medical assistance should be sought.
