World Sight Day: In today's digital age, mobile phones, laptops, and computers have become an integral part of our daily lives. From studying and office work to entertainment, spending hours in front of a screen has become commonplace. However, prolonged and continuous screen exposure can lead to various eye problems. Straining the eyes for extended periods—especially without breaks—while using mobile phones or laptops can be particularly taxing.

While completely stopping screen usage isn't feasible for everyone, adopting a few simple precautions can help reduce eye strain. On the occasion of World Sight Day, let us understand how screen time affects our eyes and what measures we can take to maintain good eye health.
How do mobile phones and laptops affect the eyes?
Staring at mobile, laptop, or computer screens for long periods can lead to "digital eye strain." Symptoms may include eye fatigue, dryness, a burning sensation, watering, blurred vision, and headaches.
Reduced blinking while staring at a screen can increase eye dryness. Additionally, constantly focusing on a screen at a fixed distance can cause eye fatigue.
Simple ways to protect eye health
1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen for about 20 seconds and focus on an object approximately 20 feet away. This helps give your eyes a much-needed break from the screen.
2. Maintain a proper distance from the screen
Avoid holding your mobile phone too close to your eyes. Position laptop and computer screens at a distance that allows you to read comfortably without straining your eyes.
3. Avoid continuous screen viewing
Take short, frequent breaks while working, studying, or using your mobile phone. Taking your eyes off the screen for a while to give them a rest can be beneficial.
4. Maintain appropriate screen brightness
A screen that is too bright or too dim can cause eye discomfort. Adjust the screen brightness according to the ambient lighting in the room and work in a spot where there is no unnecessary glare or reflection on the screen.
5. Blink regularly
People often blink less frequently than usual when looking at a screen. This can lead to a sensation of dryness in the eyes. Therefore, make sure to blink regularly while using a screen.
6. Avoid using your mobile in the dark
Looking at a bright mobile screen in a completely dark room can increase eye discomfort. Ensure there is adequate lighting in the room when using a mobile phone or laptop.
7. Do not ignore eye problems
Do not ignore symptoms such as persistent blurred vision, eye pain or burning sensations, frequent headaches, or difficulty seeing. In such cases, it is best to have your eyes examined by an eye specialist.
Does looking at a mobile phone always reduce eyesight?
Eye fatigue caused by screen use and a permanent decline in vision should not be considered the same issue. Prolonged screen time can lead to temporary eye fatigue and other related problems. However, if you notice persistent changes in your vision or difficulty seeing, there could be other underlying causes. In such situations, consulting an eye specialist is essential.
