If you wish to change the name on your Aadhaar card, there is important news for you. The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has implemented new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for name corrections; consequently, you can no longer change the name on your Aadhaar card from the comfort of your home. Let us explain how the name change process works under these new rules.

What is the new UIDAI rule?
Previously, one could change the name on an Aadhaar card online from home. However, under the new UIDAI SOPs, the name change process has been divided into four categories. Individuals must now submit specific documents and affidavits based on the applicable category:
1. Minor Name Change:
This category covers minor spelling errors, rearranging words in the name, expanding initials, or adding/removing a middle or last name. For instance, if someone named 'Parth Pandey' wants to change their name on the Aadhaar card to 'Parth Kumar Pandey', it would fall under this category.
2. Change After Marriage or Divorce:
If an individual wishes to change their surname after marriage or revert to a previous name after divorce, they must submit the prescribed 'Annexure D' affidavit and Proof of Identity (PoI). Additionally, the affidavit must clearly state that the name change is solely due to marriage or divorce.
3. Correction Due to Incorrect Data Entry:
If you provided correct information while filling out the form but the operator made a typing error—resulting in a spelling mistake or other error—adults will need to submit an 'Annexure B' affidavit along with Proof of Identity (PoI) or Proof of Relationship (PoR). For minors, an 'Annexure C' affidavit and the necessary documents will be required.
4. Changing Your Full Name
If, for any reason, you wish to change your full name entirely, issuing a notification in the Government Gazette is mandatory. Without this step, you will not be able to change your full name.
The Process for Changing Your Name:
If you or a family member wishes to change their name, the first step is to determine the specific category under which the change is being requested. Next, have an affidavit prepared by a notary in the appropriate format (Annexure B, C, or D) based on that category.
Then, visit your nearest Aadhaar Help Center to fill out and submit the form. The operator will complete the biometric and document verification process and provide you with a receipt. This receipt will contain a URN (Update Request Number), which you can use to track the status of your application.
