A Sign of Negative Energy or Divine Grace? Why Do You Repeatedly Yawn While Praying?

In Hinduism, worship (*Puja*) and devotion are regarded as the path to the purification of the inner self. However, it is often observed that when people sit down to chant mantras or meditate—typically after lighting a lamp—they suddenly begin to yawn repeatedly.

Generally, this is attributed to physical fatigue or lethargy; however, from the perspective of the scriptures and spirituality, deeper significance lies hidden behind this phenomenon. Let us explore this further.

**The Expulsion of Negative Energy**
According to religious beliefs, when we regularly engage in worship or chant mantras, a powerful flow of positive energy begins to circulate both within that space and within ourselves. The negative thoughts, mental stress, and *Tamasic* (inert or impure) vibrations already present within the human body are unable to withstand this divine energy.

As positive energy enters our being, it pushes out the negativity that has been suppressed deep within. Yawning serves as a sign of this very process. Simply put, negativity is being expelled from the body in the form of yawns.

**The Mind's Dual State**
According to the *Achar Khand* (Code of Conduct section) of the *Manusmriti*, there are times when our physical body is seated at the place of worship, yet our mind is preoccupied with worldly anxieties, business matters, or family concerns. When the mind oscillates between sacred mantras and mundane worldly thoughts in this manner, an internal conflict—a veritable battle—erupts within it. This mental distraction and lack of concentration manifest as yawning.

**What to Do If You Yawn During Worship?**
**Perform *Achaman***: After yawning, perform *Achaman* (ritual sipping of water for purification) or touch your right ear. According to the scriptures, deities reside in the right ear, and touching it is believed to bring about immediate purification.

**Cover Your Mouth**: Do not leave your mouth open while yawning; cover it with your hand and snap your fingers.

**Take Deep Breaths**: Taking deep breaths before commencing the *Sankalp* (sacred resolve) for the worship helps ward off lethargy and yawning. Pay attention to your posture—sitting with a straight spine ensures the proper flow of positive energy. Therefore, sit with your spine held straight.
