Do your warm clothes smell musty as soon as you take them out of the cupboard? Try these tips—no washing required..

Before Diwali, households typically undergo a thorough deep cleaning, and it is also the time when winter clothes are brought out of storage. Often, these garments develop an unpleasant, musty odor, which necessitates the additional task of washing them.

If you are looking for ways to eliminate this musty smell from your winter clothing without having to wash them, the following tips may prove useful. These methods allow you to freshen up your winter garments without the need for a full wash.

Sunlight and Fresh Air
Regardless of which method you choose to remove the musty, damp smell from woolen garments, it is essential to air them out—ideally by placing them in direct sunlight.

Baking Soda
Baking soda works like magic to remove odors from sweaters. Simply place a small amount of baking soda into a small cotton pouch (or tie it inside a piece of cotton cloth) and place this pouch in a bag along with your clothes for 1–2 hours. Ensure that the baking soda does not come into direct contact with the fabric.

Neem Leaves
Boil some neem leaves in two glasses of water, then strain the liquid and pour it into a spray bottle. Lightly mist your woolen garments with this solution, then leave them out in the fresh air or sunlight. Within a few hours, the musty odor will disappear.

Orange or Lemon Peels
Orange and lemon peels can also help refresh your woolen clothing. Instead of discarding the peels, place them inside a mesh bag or a small, breathable pouch and tuck them among your sweaters. Note that these should not be placed directly inside the sweaters themselves; rather, keep them in the cupboard or storage bag where the clothes are stored.

White Vinegar
Vinegar is considered an excellent cleaning agent, as it acts as a natural deodorizer for clothing. To remove odors from a sweater using vinegar, prepare a solution by mixing equal parts of vinegar and water in a small bottle. Lightly spray this mixture onto the garment and leave it out in the open air.
