Causes of Hair Color Fading: Whether it is to hide grey hair or to give your hair a fresh new look, the trend of coloring hair is popular across all age groups. However, a common complaint is that even after spending a fortune at a salon, the color fades after just a few washes! Moreover, the hair often becomes dry, lifeless, and frizzy—resembling a broomstick—after washing. If this happens to you, rest assured the problem lies not with the hair color itself, but with your hair care routine.

Whenever you step out into strong sunlight, cover your hair with a scarf or a cap.
Vipul Chudasama, a renowned hair expert with over 20 years of experience, recently shared some simple yet effective ways to keep colored hair looking fresh and glossy for longer. Let’s find out where you might be going wrong and how to fix it.
1. Washing Too Often-
Frequent washing is a major reason why colored hair fades quickly. When you wash your hair daily or every other day, the combination of water and shampoo strips away the color pigments rapidly.
How to fix it: Break the habit of washing your hair every day. Hair experts recommend washing colored hair only 2 to 3 times a week. This preserves the hair's natural oils and keeps the color looking fresh for a longer period.
2. Using the Wrong Shampoo-
Continuing to use your regular or sulfate-based shampoo after coloring your hair is a major mistake. Ordinary shampoos are too harsh for colored hair and can strip away its shine in a single wash.
How to fix it: Always use shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for colored hair (color-protect products). They lock in the vibrancy of your hair color and prevent it from fading prematurely.
3. Excessive Heat Styling –
Frequent use of blow dryers, straighteners, or curling irons is detrimental to colored hair. The high temperatures generated by these tools open up the hair cuticles, causing the color to fade and the hair to become extremely frizzy.
How to fix it: Minimize the use of styling tools. Whenever you do use them, never forget to apply a heat protectant serum or spray.
4. Ignoring Sun Exposure –
We often protect our skin from the sun but leave our hair exposed. Harmful UV rays oxidize the hair color, causing it to look dull or off-tone very quickly.
How to fix it: Cover your hair with a scarf or cap whenever you step out into strong sunlight. Additionally, you can use a UV-protectant hair serum.
5. Using Heavy Oils (Incorrect Oiling) –
To combat dryness after coloring, people often massage their hair with heavy or traditional oils, such as mustard oil. These heavy oils can loosen the color pigments and strip them from the hair.
How to fix it: While oiling is beneficial for hair, choosing the right oil is crucial. For colored hair, always use lightweight oils like Argan oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil. These deeply nourish the hair without damaging the color. Bonus Tip (for dry and frizzy hair):
If your hair has become extremely frizzy after coloring, make sure to use a deep conditioning hair mask or treat it with warm, light oil once a week. This will hydrate the hair from within, eliminating frizz and restoring a mirror-like shine.
