Rice Peda Recipe: If you are looking to prepare something sweet—other than the traditional *halwa* and *puri*—for *Kanya Pujan* during Navratri, *chawal ke peda* (rice-based sweet discs) make an excellent choice. You don’t need to buy *khoya* (milk solids) or expensive dry fruits to make them; you can prepare these delicious *pedas* using ingredients already available in your kitchen, such as rice, milk, desiccated coconut, and milk powder. The aroma of cardamom and saffron further enhances their flavor.

Making these rice *pedas* is quite simple. The key is to cook the rice thoroughly and roast the mixture until it reaches the right consistency, which makes it easy to shape the *pedas*. Let’s look at the ingredients and the complete recipe.
Ingredients for Rice Pedas
You will need the following items for this recipe:
1. Rice – 1½ bowls
2. *Desi ghee* (clarified butter) – ½ cup
3. Milk – 1½ cups
4. Desiccated coconut – 1½ cups
5. Milk powder – 1½ cups
6. Sugar – 1½ cups
7. Cardamom – 3 to 4 pods
8. Saffron – a pinch
9. Finely chopped pistachios – for garnishing
Easy Recipe for Rice Pedas
1. Cook the rice in milk
First, wash the rice thoroughly and soak it in water for a while. Then, drain the water and place the rice in milk to cook. Cook the rice over a low flame until it becomes soft. If the milk runs low before the rice is fully cooked, you may add a little more milk as needed.
2. Mash and roast the rice
Once the rice is cooked, let it cool slightly and mash it well. Ensure that there are no large, unmashed grains left in the mixture. Next, heat the *ghee* in a heavy-bottomed pan and add the mashed rice to it. Cook the mixture over a low flame, stirring constantly, to ensure it does not stick to the bottom of the pan.
3. Add sugar, cardamom, and other ingredients
Once the rice mixture begins to thicken, add the sugar and cardamom powder. After the sugar has dissolved, stir in the desiccated coconut and milk powder. Add a pinch of saffron and mix well. Continue to cook the mixture over a low flame until it thickens and begins to pull away from the sides of the pan.

4. Shape the pedas
Once the mixture has thickened, turn off the heat and allow it to cool slightly. When the mixture is cool enough to handle, lightly grease your palms with ghee. Take small portions, shape them into balls, and press them gently to form pedas. Garnish with chopped pistachios. Your delicious homemade rice pedas are now ready!
