What is the difference between Shivaratri and Mahashivratri?
- Shivaratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha of every month, which is usually called Masik Shivaratri. Whereas Mahashivratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha of the Phalgun month.
- Shivratri is celebrated once every month. In such a situation, there are 12 Shivratris in a year. Whereas the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated only once a year. That is why it is considered the most special.
- Mahashivratri is celebrated as the anniversary of the marriage of Mahadev and Goddess Parvati. However, nothing like this happened on the day of Shivratri. On this day, only Bholenath is worshipped.
- There are a total of 12 Shivratris in a year and Mahashivratri is also considered one of these 12 Shivratris. In simple words, 11 Shivratris are celebrated in a year and 1 Mahashivratri is celebrated.
When is Mahashivratri 2025?
The Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Falgun month will start on 26 February at 11:08 am. At the same time, this Tithi will end on 27 February at 08:54 am. In such a situation, on the basis of Udaya Tithi, Mahashivratri will be celebrated on 26 February 2025.
Why is Mahashivratri celebrated?
According to mythological belief, the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took place on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha in the month of Falgun.
