Often, we go to the supermarket and pick up any packet of oats in the name of "health," but did you know that not all oats available in the market help with weight loss? In fact, some can actually cause weight gain. Today, we'll clear up this confusion and understand the real difference between "regular oats" and "rolled oats."
What are Rolled Oats?
Rolled oats are also called "old-fashioned oats." To make them, the oat grains are first steamed and then rolled flat.
Characteristics: They are slightly thicker, take 5-10 minutes to cook, and have a slightly chewy texture.
What are Plain or Instant Oats?
What we often consider "plain oats" are actually highly processed "instant oats." They are steamed extensively and rolled very thinly.
Characteristics: They dissolve instantly in hot water or milk and become like a porridge. The "masala oats" available in the market often fall into this category.
Which to choose for weight loss?
If your goal is solely weight loss, the winner is clear - rolled oats.
There are three main reasons for this:
Satiety: The body has to work harder to digest rolled oats. After eating them, you feel full for a longer time, which prevents you from snacking unnecessarily.
Sugar Levels: Instant oats are digested very quickly, causing a sudden spike and then drop in blood sugar levels (which then makes you feel hungry again). Rolled oats provide energy gradually. The risk of adulteration: Instant or flavored oats often contain hidden sugars, salt, and artificial flavors, which can lead to weight gain instead of weight loss.
Therefore, if you want to stay fit, opt for a packet of rolled oats. You can make it delicious by adding fresh fruits, nuts, or a pinch of cinnamon. Remember, the less processed the food, the healthier the breakfast.
