GRAP-4 Lifted: To Wear a Mask or Not? A major relief has come for residents of Delhi-NCR ahead of Christmas and the New Year. The Commission for Air Quality Management has lifted the strict restrictions of GRAP-4 (Graded Response Action Plan, Phase 4) in view of the improvement in air quality in Delhi. On December 24, 2025, Delhi's average Air Quality Index (AQI) improved to 271, which falls in the 'poor' category.

However, the lifting of GRAP-4 does not mean that pollution has completely disappeared. Experts say that the air is still in the 'poor' category, and the strict rules of GRAP Stages 1, 2, and 3 will still remain in effect. So, the biggest question is, should we take off our masks now? The answer is no. Masks were not only mandatory under GRAP-4, but they are also a protective shield against fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), which is still present in the air.
Why are masks still necessary?
Even though the thick blanket of smog has lifted, the level of fine particles like PM 2.5 in Delhi's air is still above safe standards. These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause respiratory illnesses and heart problems. Even after the lifting of GRAP-4, the AQI is at a 'poor' level, so wearing an N95 mask while going outside is still extremely important, especially for children, the elderly, and those with heart conditions.
Outdoor Activities
Experts advise that until the AQI reaches a 'normal' level, one should avoid morning walks or strenuous exercise outdoors. Taking deep breaths in polluted air means more toxins enter the body instead of oxygen. Parents are advised to ensure their children wear masks when going to school and to keep them well-hydrated so that the body can detoxify.
Caution is the best protection.
According to the Meteorological Department's forecasts, changes in wind speed in the coming days could lead to a rise in pollution levels again. In this situation, not wearing a mask can be detrimental to your health. Until the air in Delhi is completely "clean," it is wise to keep wearing a mask as part of your daily routine.
Take these precautions:
Along with wearing a mask, some other precautions are also extremely important at this time.
Limit morning walks or outdoor activities until the AQI level improves significantly.
Use a good-quality air purifier with a HEPA filter to keep the air inside your home clean.
Drink plenty of water and fluids to help flush out toxins from your body.
Grow air-purifying plants like snake plants or aloe vera, which help increase oxygen levels.
Practice pranayama indoors to strengthen your lungs and drink plenty of water to help eliminate toxins from your body. Don't forget to include Vitamin C-rich fruits in your diet.
