Are you making these mistakes while observing the Navratri fast under the guise of 'falahar'? Correct them, or your health could suffer..

The festival of Shardiya Navratri begins on November 11. During this period, devotees worship various forms of the Goddess and observe fasts. Instead of their regular meals, devotees consume *falahar* (fasting-friendly foods) or *sattvic* (pure and light) meals.

However, staying hungry for long periods or consuming excessive fried foods under the guise of fasting can lead to issues like weakness, dehydration, and acidity. If you are observing a fast this Navratri, it is crucial to take special care of your health. Let us look at some important things to keep in mind during the Navratri fast.

**Stay Hydrated**
People often drink less water while fasting, which can lead to dehydration and fatigue. These issues can be particularly troublesome on an empty stomach. Therefore, ensure you drink 8–10 glasses of water daily. Supplement water intake with coconut water, lemon water, and buttermilk to maintain the body's electrolyte balance.

**Energy-Boosting Foods**
The body receives fewer carbohydrates during a fast, which can cause feelings of weakness. Include fruits like bananas, apples, and papayas in your diet. Additionally, consume dry fruits such as almonds, walnuts, and *makhana* (fox nuts) to provide sustained energy to the body.

**Avoid Fried and Oily Foods**
During fasts, people often consume *puris*, *pakoras*, or chips made from *kuttu* (buckwheat) or *singhara* (water chestnut) flour. Eating fried foods on an empty stomach can trigger acidity and gas. Instead of fried items, opt for boiled potatoes, *singhara* flour *rotis*, or grilled foods.

**Consume Rock Salt (*Sendha Namak*)**
Regular salt is not consumed during fasts; use rock salt (*sendha namak*) instead. However, keep the salt intake moderate. Consuming excessive salt can lead to high blood pressure and bloating.

**Limit tea and coffee consumption**
Many people frequently drink tea or coffee for energy during a fast. Consuming them on an empty stomach can cause heartburn and acidity. Therefore, opt for juice, buttermilk, or coconut water instead of tea or coffee while fasting.

**Rest is also essential**
The body receives fewer calories than usual during a fast, making rest crucial. Ensure you get 7–8 hours of sleep to maintain energy levels, and avoid heavy workouts or strenuous physical activity.
