Mental Health Day: Even a cheerful, outgoing person can fall victim to depression; mental distress isn't always visible on the face..

Mental health issues are rising rapidly across the globe. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that approximately one in seven people worldwide may suffer from a mental health problem; this means over 1.2 billion people globally are grappling with some form of mental health issue. Problems ranging from stress and anxiety to depression are being observed in people of all ages, from children to the elderly.

Generally, when we see someone laughing and talking, we assume they are happy; however, a person who appears happy on the outside is not necessarily feeling well on the inside.

When dealing with mental health issues, people often hide their struggles from others, maintaining a facade of normalcy and giving no hint of their true emotions. Consequently, recognizing their mental distress can be difficult. Depression is one such condition that is not easily identified merely by facial expressions or outward behavior. It is not essential for someone suffering from depression to constantly appear sad or be in tears.

**Raising Awareness About Mental Health Issues**

Today is World Mental Health Day. Observed annually on October 10th, this day aims to raise awareness about mental health, eliminate the stigma associated with mental health issues, and encourage people to seek professional help promptly.

Health experts note that while depression is a serious mental health condition, it does not necessarily manifest as constant sadness in everyone who suffers from it.

Some individuals suffering from depression may exhibit symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, and sleep disturbances. Additionally, they may experience a loss of interest in activities they previously enjoyed. For this reason, understanding mental health issues requires looking beyond a person's smile and paying attention to long-term changes in their emotions and behavior. People with depression do not necessarily look sad.

According to the WHO, approximately 332 million people worldwide may be affected by depression. Health experts state that depression is a serious mental health issue that can impact a person's emotions, thoughts, behavior, and daily life.

People often assume that someone suffering from depression always appears sad or tearful. However, many individuals battling depression behave normally in front of others—going to work, socializing, and even laughing. This does not mean their struggle is any less significant. Despite appearing normal on the outside, they may experience an internal sense of emptiness, hopelessness, or emotional exhaustion.

So, how can depression be identified?

Health experts note that symptoms of depression vary from person to person. However, there are some common signs that can help determine if someone is suffering from a mental health issue:
A loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed.
Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness.
Sleeping too little or too much.
Significant changes in appetite and weight (either loss or gain).
Constant fatigue and difficulty performing even simple tasks.
Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.

Mental health experts advise consulting a psychiatrist if feelings of sadness, hopelessness, a lack of interest, or sleep disturbances persist and interfere with daily life. Depression can be treated through psychotherapy and medication. Timely identification of symptoms and appropriate treatment can help alleviate these issues.
