Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful phases in a woman's life; however, these nine months also bring various health-related challenges. During pregnancy, many women are diagnosed with blood pressure or blood sugar issues for the first time, while postpartum mental health problems—such as postpartum depression—can further complicate matters.

After childbirth, a woman's focus often shifts to her baby and returning to daily life. However, a new study has highlighted a crucial aspect of women's health that could prove costly if ignored. Certain complications experienced during pregnancy are not limited to that period alone; they can increase the risk of developing serious diseases in the years to follow.
In a UK-based study involving over 1.4 million women, researchers sought to understand the link between various pregnancy-related complications and diseases that manifest in later years. Let us look at the risks identified in this study.
Risks associated with pregnancy complications
A recent study conducted in the UK found that women who experienced health complications during pregnancy faced a higher risk of developing heart disease, blood sugar issues, high blood pressure, and kidney-related ailments in the future.
The study emphasized the need to pay serious attention to conditions such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and postpartum depression.
These conditions can increase the risk of four major diseases later in life: heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic kidney disease.
In the report published in *BMJ Medicine*, researchers noted that gestational diabetes is a primary concern. The study found that the rate of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life was approximately seven times higher among women who had experienced this condition. High blood pressure and pre-eclampsia during pregnancy were also found to be linked to future health risks. Preterm birth, miscarriage, stillbirth, and other delivery-related complications were also identified as factors that could increase health risks later in life.
**Complications during childbirth are also dangerous**
Researchers from several institutions, including King's College London, conducted this study. They found that preterm birth or miscarriage, placental abruption (where the placenta detaches from the uterine wall before birth), and the baby being significantly smaller or larger than expected for its gestational age could increase the risk of serious health problems later on.
According to the researchers, experiencing high blood pressure during pregnancy can predispose a woman to hypertension; the risk of developing high blood pressure in the future was more than three times higher in such cases.
The rate of chronic kidney disease was also nearly double. Additionally, an increased risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes was observed.
Similarly, postpartum depression was also found to pose a risk to future health.

**What do the experts say?**
For this study, researchers utilized a large database from the UK's primary healthcare system, analyzing data on women who were pregnant between 2000 and 2022. They studied information regarding more than 1.4 million women.
This group included women who had not experienced any complications during pregnancy. The women were monitored for an average of four years.
Researchers state that further study is needed to understand the underlying biological processes linking pregnancy complications to subsequent illnesses.
