The risk of cancer is rising rapidly across the globe, affecting people of almost all ages. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern that cancer cases could increase further in the coming years, making it essential for everyone to remain vigilant and cautious.

Lung cancer poses the highest risk among men, while breast cancer is the most common threat among women. Health experts note that certain risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing cancer; being aware of these factors and taking preventive measures is crucial.
**Cancer Risk in the Country**
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has released state-wise data and projections for 2026. Currently, approximately 1.56 million (15.6 lakh) new cancer cases are reported annually across the country. Given the rate at which the risk is growing, this figure is projected to rise to 1.75 million (17.5 lakh) by 2030. Uttar Pradesh is estimated to have the highest number of new cancer cases (231,671), followed by Maharashtra (133,825) and West Bengal (120,444).
Health experts state that the risk of cancer increases with age.
According to the data, the average age at diagnosis is 66 years. However, the risk has increasingly been observed in younger people as well.
Therefore, timely identification of symptoms and screening is essential.
Adopting preventive measures from a young age can also help reduce the risk of cancer.
**Could Your Diet Be Linked to It?**
Diet plays a significant role in cancer prevention. Consuming an unhealthy and unbalanced diet over a long period can lead to weight gain and obesity, which increases the risk of various types of cancer. A high-fat diet can increase the risk of obesity and has been linked to a higher risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancers.
Meanwhile, smoked and highly spicy foods are considered to increase the risk of stomach cancer.
Therefore, maintaining a balanced diet is essential.
**Excess Weight Increases Risk**
Obesity is a significant risk factor for cancer. Excessive fat accumulation in the body can affect hormonal balance and inflammatory processes.
Studies indicate that obesity is linked to an increased risk of at least 13 types of cancer. Prominent among these are endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterine lining), breast cancer, and colorectal cancer.
In the United States, approximately 42 percent of adults struggle with obesity. Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce the risk of various diseases, including cancer.

**Risks Associated with Alcohol and Smoking**
Alcohol consumption and smoking are major factors that increase the risk of cancer. Excessive alcohol intake can damage the liver and, over time, raise the risk of liver cancer. Its impact is not limited to the liver; it can also increase the risk of cancers of the mouth and rectum.
