Jamun and Blood Sugar Levels: Jamun (Black Plum), a fruit that appears in markets during the summer and monsoon seasons, is renowned not only for its taste but also for its medicinal properties. This fruit has a very short lifespan—typically lasting only 1–2 days before spoiling. Even if stored in a refrigerator, its shelf life remains quite limited. Although Jamun may have a short shelf life, its health benefits are considered to be substantial. In particular, Jamun is regarded as a panacea for patients suffering from diabetes. Ayurvedic experts even consider the seeds of the Jamun fruit to be effective in controlling blood sugar levels.

Kamini Sinha, a dietician and the founder of the 'Diet Mantra' clinic in Noida, explains that Jamun is rich in fiber, antioxidants, and various beneficial plant compounds. It possesses a low glycemic index, which means it does not cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This is precisely why Jamun is included in the list of diabetes-friendly fruits. The fiber content in Jamun can help improve and maintain the health of the digestive system. Furthermore, the antioxidants present in the fruit play a role in protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals. It is also considered beneficial for heart health.
**Jamun is Not a Substitute for Medication**
According to experts, the outer skin of the Jamun fruit is quite delicate, and the fruit itself has a significantly high water content. For this reason, it is difficult to store for extended periods at room temperature. Once purchased, it should be consumed promptly or stored in a refrigerator. If kept for too long, both its taste and nutritional quality may be compromised. Diabetic patients should always consume fresh Jamun. While Jamun can act as a supplement to help control blood sugar levels, it is not a substitute for prescribed medication. Therefore, alongside consuming Jamun, it remains essential to take medications prescribed by a doctor on time.

**What Ayurveda Says About Jamun**
In the system of Ayurveda, special significance is attributed not only to the Jamun fruit itself but also to its seeds. Many people dry their seeds and use them in powdered form. Jamun is a nutritious seasonal fruit that has a short shelf life but is considered to be highly rich in nutrients. It can serve as part of a balanced diet for patients with diabetes. Whenever the Jamun season arrives, diabetic patients should consume it daily to derive the maximum possible benefits.
