Karwa Chauth 2026: Fasting for the first time? Include these items in your 'sargi' to stay energized throughout the day..

Healthy 'Sargi' for Karwa Chauth: The Karwa Chauth fast holds great significance for married women. On this day, women observe a *nirjala* (waterless) fast, praying for the long life of their husbands. Going an entire day without food or water—after consuming the *sargi* (pre-dawn meal)—can be challenging. Therefore, it is essential to include nutritious and energy-boosting items in your *sargi* platter to ensure your body remains energized throughout the day and to minimize the risk of feeling weak.

The *sargi* ritual is a traditional part of Karwa Chauth. In many families, a mother-in-law presents her daughter-in-law with a *sargi* platter, which typically includes fruits, sweets, dry fruits, and items for *shringar* (adornment). The *sargi* is consumed before sunrise, marking the beginning of the fast. It is best to include nutritious food items in the *sargi* platter so that you feel full for longer and your body receives the necessary nutrients. If your family follows the tradition of *sargi*, pay special attention to the food items you include when preparing the platter.

Include Nuts and Seeds for Sustained Energy
Adding dry fruits and seeds is an excellent way to make your *sargi* platter more nutritious. You can include nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashews, raisins, and figs, along with seeds such as pumpkin, sunflower, and chia seeds. You might also consider soaking almonds, raisins, and figs overnight to consume the next morning. The nutrients they contain help provide energy to the body and keep you feeling full.

Include Seasonal Fruits in Your 'Sargi' Platter
You can include fruits like bananas, apples, papayas, or any others of your choice. Fruits provide the body with hydration, fiber, and various essential vitamins. It is best to opt for fresh, seasonal fruits.

*Doodh ki Sevai* (Vermicelli in Milk)
Including *doodh ki sevai* (vermicelli cooked in milk) in your *sargi* platter can help keep hunger at bay for a longer period. You can easily prepare *sewai* (vermicelli) using 1 glass of milk, 1 cup of *sewai*, 1 teaspoon of cardamom powder, and jaggery. You can also add cashews and almonds to the *sewai* instead of consuming them separately.

Include filling and nutritious items in your *sargi* platter.
Choose items for your *sargi* platter that help keep you feeling full for a longer time. Options include *daliya* (broken wheat/porridge), *roti*, a light *paratha*, or other dishes made from whole grains. Pairing these with protein-rich foods can also be beneficial. Avoid consuming too many deep-fried or salty foods, as these can increase thirst while you are fasting.

*Paneer Paratha*
Including a *paneer paratha* in your *sargi* is a great option. *Paneer* contains protein and fat, which help keep you feeling full for an extended period. To prepare it, mash the *paneer* and mix in some roasted cumin, a little red chili powder, and salt to taste. Stuff this mixture into a ball of whole wheat or multigrain dough and cook the *paratha* using minimal oil. Avoid using refined flour (*maida*) when preparing it.

A bowl of yogurt (*dahi*)
Yogurt contains essential nutrients like protein and calcium and can help support healthy digestion. If you find yogurt agreeable, you can include it in your *sargi* meal.
