PM Modi on Obesity: Obesity is being seen as the most prominent reason for the growing serious challenges to the health sector. Obesity is also a growing public health concern in India, where the number of overweight and obese people has increased significantly in all age groups. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5, 24% of women and 23% of men are overweight or obese. Apart from this, an alarming increase is also being seen in childhood obesity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been continuously expressing concern over the growing problem of obesity in the country. In his address to the country from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, the Prime Minister once again expressed concern about the problem of obesity.
PM Modi said, when I talk about fitness, there is a big concern in this regard, which I want to put in front of all of you once again - that is obesity. All people need to be careful on this subject. Experts have expressed concern that in the coming years, every third person may become a victim of obesity. We have to be careful to avoid this.
Advice to reduce cooking oil by 10%
The Prime Minister said that many efforts are necessary to avoid obesity, and a small suggestion can play an important role in this. For this, all families should decide that whenever they bring cooking oil home, they should bring 10% less oil than before. This can play an important role for you in reducing the risk of obesity.
This is not the first time that the Prime Minister has expressed concern about the problem of obesity and how to deal with it. Earlier in February this year, in the monthly radio program 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi had appealed to the people to cut down on oil and reduce obesity.
Why is obesity considered a serious threat?
Health experts say that obesity is not just increased body weight; it is a serious threat to overall health. It is considered a long-term health risk because it is the root of many serious diseases. Doctors assess obesity by body mass index (BMI) and waist size. Belly and waist fat are considered the most dangerous, as they affect the functioning of internal organs.
Studies show that obesity disrupts the body's metabolism. This reduces the effect of insulin in the body, increases blood sugar, and can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Apart from this, obesity also increases the risk of heart diseases by disturbing the balance of cholesterol and triglycerides.
People who are overweight have extra pressure on their hearts, which can cause high blood pressure. Apart from this, fat accumulates in the blood and narrows the arteries (atherosclerosis), which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Experts said that problems like blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol can be reduced by reducing body weight by 5-10%.

Obesity also increases the risk of cancer.
According to the report of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), obesity increases the risk of 13 types of cancer. These include breast, liver, colon, kidney, pancreas, ovary, thyroid and stomach cancer. Be it men or women, everyone can be a victim of this, so it is important that you keep taking measures to keep your weight under control from an early age.
Many studies show that there is a clear link between obesity and cancer risk. This is mainly due to visceral fat (intestinal or abdominal fat) and the inflammation caused by it.
