On occasions like Karwa Chauth or Ahoi Ashtami, women observe a fast for the entire day. However, if you are pregnant and planning to go without food or water for 24 hours, please exercise caution. This act of devotion could potentially compromise your health and that of your unborn child. Remaining without food or water for an extended period can lead to issues such as dehydration, weakness, and a drop in blood sugar levels. To address whether pregnant women should fast—and what precautions they should take if they choose to do so—Local18 spoke with Dr. Palak Diwan, an obstetrician-gynecologist and women’s health specialist at RG Hospital, Faridabad.
Should pregnant women fast?
Dr. Palak Diwan advises against observing a fast for Karwa Chauth or Ahoi Ashtami during pregnancy. However, if a woman still wishes to fast, she should opt for a 'fruit-based' fast (phalahar). This can include consuming fruits, coconut water, buttermilk, and small portions of dry fruits. It is essential to eat something every two to three hours.
What could be the impact on the baby’s health?
Dr. Palak explains that if a pregnant woman goes without food or water for 24 hours, it can negatively affect both her health and that of her unborn child. Prolonged fasting can cause blood sugar levels to drop, which may disrupt the supply of nutrients to the baby and increase the risk of pregnancy-related complications. Furthermore, dehydration can lead to weakness and even fainting.
Women who need to exercise extra caution
Dr. Palak notes that women who already have conditions such as blood sugar issues, thyroid disorders, or other high-risk pregnancy-related complications should avoid fasting. If you are still considering fasting, be sure to consult your doctor first.
What should you do during a fast and when breaking it?
According to Dr. Palak, pregnant women should not go without food or water while fasting. You should consume small, regular portions of fruits, dry fruits, and other nutritious foods. Avoid exposure to excessive heat and refrain from strenuous household chores; rest as much as possible. When breaking your fast, opt for light, nutritious food. You may include items like coconut water and protein-rich foods in your diet. Most importantly, prioritize both your own health and that of your baby during pregnancy.
