The festival of Navratri falls tomorrow, March 19, 2026. Preparations—ranging from deep cleaning of homes to decorating the altar (*Chowki*) for the Mother Goddess—are in full swing. We often devote a great deal of attention to the idol of the Goddess and the decorations, yet quite frequently, at the very last moment, certain items for the *Puja Thali* (worship platter) get overlooked.

In Hinduism, the *Shodashopchar Puja*—a ritual comprising 16 distinct steps—holds immense significance. However, even if you are performing a simpler form of worship at home, it is essential that your *Puja Thali* is complete in every respect. It is believed that when our *Puja Samagri* (worship materials) are complete, our mind does not wander, allowing us to devote ourselves to the worship of the Mother Goddess with undivided attention.

**The Basis in Scriptures**
The *Devi Bhagavata Purana* and the *Agama Shastras* state that the worship of the Goddess necessitates the inclusion of *Panchopchar* (five key items) or *Dashopchar* (ten key items) materials. These items are not merely symbolic; they also serve to purify the surrounding environment.

**9 Essential Items for the Puja Thali**
1. **Red *Roli* (Vermilion):** This is the most essential item for adorning the Goddess (*Shringar*) and applying the *Tilak* (sacred mark). It symbolizes power (*Shakti*) and good fortune.

2. **Rice (*Akshat*):** Ensure that the rice grains are unbroken. In the scriptures, the term *Akshat* literally means "that which is unbroken" or "undiminished"; it symbolizes completeness and wholeness.

3. **Lamp (*Deepak*):** Be sure to include a beautiful lamp (*Deepak*) in your *Puja Thali*.

4. **Incense (*Dhup*):** Include incense sticks (*Dhup*) with a fragrance of your choice—one that aids in focusing and concentrating the mind.

5. **Flowers:** The color red is extremely dear to Goddess Durga (*Maa Durga*). Hibiscus or rose flowers not only enhance the aesthetic beauty of the *Puja Thali* but also deepen the sense of devotion.

6. **Sacred Thread (*Mouli* / *Kalava*):** This is also known as the *Raksha Sutra* (Protective Thread). During the worship ritual, it is tied around the wrist and is also offered to the Goddess as a symbolic garment.

7. **Holy Water (*Gangajal*):** The presence of holy water from the Ganges (*Gangajal*) is crucial for the purpose of purification. It is sprinkled upon oneself and the ritual materials.

8. Betel leaves and betel nuts are considered indispensable for making a solemn pledge (Sankalp) for any auspicious undertaking and for invoking the deities.

9. Be sure to include Batashas, ​​Mishri (rock sugar), or any kind of fruit to offer as *Bhog* (sacred food offering) to the Mother Goddess.
