In Hinduism, a red or yellow thread is tied around the wrist after any puja or ritual, which is called Raksha Sutra. It is not considered just a thread, but a 'protective thread' that protects devotees from difficulties and negative energy. However, many people wear this thread for months or until it breaks. According to astrology, there are some strict rules for tying and removing the Raksha Sutra, and not following them can negate its auspicious effects.

How often should it be changed?
According to the scriptures, the Raksha Sutra should be kept in the hand for a maximum of 21 days. Usually, after 21 days, the color of this thread starts to fade, and its positive energy diminishes. Keeping a faded or old Raksha Sutra in the hand is considered inauspicious. Therefore, it should be replaced with a new one after 21 days.
Auspicious days for changing the Raksha Sutra:
Tuesday or Saturday are considered the best days to remove the old Raksha Sutra and tie a new one. You can also change it on Sankranti or other festivals. Removing the Raksha Sutra on any other day is not considered appropriate.
On which hand should it be tied?
According to palmistry and scriptures, men and unmarried girls should always tie the Raksha Sutra on their right hand. Married women, however, should tie the Raksha Sutra on their left hand. Doing so ensures that the planetary energies flow in the right direction.
How to tie the Raksha Sutra:
While tying the Raksha Sutra, your fist should be closed, and your other hand should be on your head. The thread should always be wrapped around the wrist 3, 5, or 7 times. Chanting the mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' or 'Yen Baddho Bali Raja...' while tying the thread enhances its effect.
What to do after removing the Raksha Sutra?
The old Raksha Sutra should never be thrown in the trash or a dirty place. It should be respectfully removed and immersed in flowing water (a river) or buried in the soil at the base of a sacred tree. This preserves its sanctity.

Avoid these mistakes:
Do not tie the Rakhi with dirty hands. Never use scissors or a blade to cut the Rakhi; untie or break it with your hands. Immediately replace any Rakhi whose color has completely faded, as it can attract negative energy.
