Every year, we celebrate August 15th and January 26th with great enthusiasm. Both dates are extremely important for our country, and on both days, the tricolor flag flies proudly. But have you ever noticed a subtle difference?
On Independence Day, August 15th, the Prime Minister hoists the flag from the Red Fort, but on Republic Day, January 26th, the President unfurls the tricolor on Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath). Why is this the case? There's a very interesting and constitutional reason behind it. Let's learn more about it in detail.

Constitutional Head vs. Head of Government
To understand this difference, we need to understand a little about the Constitution. On August 15, 1947, the country gained independence, but the Constitution of India was not yet in effect. The Prime Minister is the head of the government, so he hoisted the flag during the independence celebrations.
On January 26, 1950, our Constitution came into effect. The President is the constitutional head of the country and is considered the 'First Citizen'. Republic Day is a celebration of the implementation of the Constitution; therefore, the right to unfurl the tricolor on this day belongs to the President.
What does history say?
When India gained independence on August 15, 1947, we did not have our own President. At that time, Lord Mountbatten was the Governor-General. Therefore, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, as Prime Minister, hoisted the flag. However, in 1950, when the Constitution came into effect, Dr. Rajendra Prasad had become the President, so he unfurled the flag on January 26th. This has been the tradition ever since.
Difference between 'Flag Hoisting' and 'Flag Unfurling'
Not only is there a difference in who hoists the flag, but there is also a significant difference in the method of raising the flag:
August 15th (Flag Hoisting): On this day, the tricolor is pulled up from the bottom using a rope and then unfurled. This symbolizes India rising as a new nation.
January 26th (Flag Unfurling): On Republic Day, the flag is already tied at the top. It contains flowers. The President simply pulls a rope to unfurl it. This symbolizes that India is already a free country.
This time, when you watch President Murmu unfurl the tricolor on Kartavya Path on Monday, January 26th, Monday, remember that it's not just a ceremony, but a symbol of respect for our Constitution and democracy.
