Sarvapitra Amavasya 2026: Do not bring these items home—even by mistake—as you bid farewell to your ancestors..

According to the Vedic calendar, Sarvapitri Amavasya will be observed on October 10. It is also known as Mahalaya Amavasya or Pitru Moksha Amavasya. This day marks the conclusion of Pitru Paksha and the farewell to the ancestors. On Sarvapitri Amavasya, *Shraddha* rituals are performed for ancestors whose date of death is unknown or for those whose *Shraddha* could not be performed during Pitru Paksha for some reason.

According to religious beliefs, performing *Shraddha* and *Tarpan* on Sarvapitri Amavasya brings peace to the souls of the ancestors, and their blessings lead to increased happiness and prosperity. Scriptures state that there are certain items one should strictly avoid bringing home on this day. It is believed that bringing these forbidden items into the house can have a negative impact on one's life and lead to various problems. In this article, let us look at the items that should not be brought home on Sarvapitri Amavasya.

Items not to be brought home on Sarvapitri Amavasya:
Iron items – According to religious beliefs, one should not bring iron or any object made of iron into the house on Sarvapitri Amavasya. It is believed that bringing iron objects home on Amavasya can lead to financial loss and *Shani Dosh* (Saturn-related affliction).

Mustard oil – Buying and bringing mustard oil home on Sarvapitri Amavasya is also prohibited. Committing this mistake can lead to inauspicious results. However, on this day, you should certainly light a lamp using mustard oil already present in the house to honor your ancestors and Lord Shani.

Sharp and pointed objects – Bringing sharp or pointed objects into the house on Sarvapitri Amavasya—such as needles, scissors, knives, nails, etc.—is considered inauspicious. It is believed that bringing these forbidden items into the home creates rifts in family relationships and leads to discord. Therefore, one should avoid purchasing these items on the day of Amavasya at all costs.

New clothes and footwear—the period of Pitru Paksha is dedicated to appeasing one's ancestors and seeking their blessings. Hence, do not buy new clothes or footwear for yourself on the day of Sarvapitra Amavasya. It is believed that doing so has a negative impact on one's life.
