When Not to Make Chapati at Home: Everyone wants the new year to bring happiness, prosperity, and progress. While some people's wishes are suddenly fulfilled, for others, the new year is just like the old one. This happens because, knowingly or unknowingly, we make several mistakes that hurt us our entire family. According to Vedic astrology, there are six occasions in 2026 when you should absolutely avoid making rotis (chapatis), otherwise, you may face problems not only for a year but for your entire life. According to scriptures and certain traditions, making rotis (chapatis/dough) on certain dates is considered inauspicious. This is associated with planetary defects, ancestral curses, and negative energy. Let's find out which dates in 2026 you should avoid making rotis at home…

Makar Sankranti (January 14, 2026)
The first festival that comes after entering the new year is Makar Sankranti. Every year, Makar Sankranti is celebrated on either January 14th or 15th. You should never make rotis on Makar Sankranti; using a griddle to make rotis on the gas stove is completely prohibited on this day. On Makar Sankranti, there is a custom of eating khichdi made with black urad dal and rice. You can also consume other food items made from rice.
Sheetla Ashtami (March 11, 2026)
Sheetla Ashtami is the second occasion in 2026 when you should avoid making rotis. This time, the festival of Sheetla Ashtami will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. On Sheetla Ashtami, stale food is offered to Goddess Sheetla, who protects against heat and infections. A fast is observed on Sheetla Ashtami, and only stale or cold food is consumed on this day.
Nag Panchami (August 17, 2026)
In 2026, you should absolutely avoid making rotis (flatbreads) on the day of Nag Panchami. This year, the festival of Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Monday, August 17, 2026. This festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half of the lunar month of Shravan. However, in some places, this festival will also be celebrated on August 16 or 18, so it is best to confirm the date with the local almanac, but August 17 is the most common date. According to पौराणिक (Puranic) beliefs, the griddle (tawa) should not be placed on the fire on Nag Panchami, as the griddle is considered a form of the serpent god.
Sharad Purnima (October 25, 2026)
In 2026, you should absolutely avoid making rotis on the day of Sharad Purnima. This year, the festival of Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The festival of Sharad Purnima is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, so one should refrain from making rotis at home on this day. Observing a fast and worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Chandra Dev (the Moon God) on Sharad Purnima brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to life.
Diwali (November 8, 2026)
In 2026, you should absolutely avoid placing a griddle on the gas stove and making rotis on the day of Diwali. This year, the festival of Diwali will begin on November 6 and end on November 11, with Lakshmi Puja being performed on November 8, 2026. Like Sharad Purnima, the festival of Diwali is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, so placing a griddle on the stove is considered prohibited on this day. It is also said that utensils should not be left empty on Diwali; it is considered inauspicious.
Mahalakshmi Vrat (Starting September 19, 2026)
In 2026, you should also avoid making rotis on the day of Mahalakshmi Vrat. In any fast or puja dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, a griddle is not placed on the gas stove. If someone makes rotis on this day, Goddess Lakshmi becomes angry, which brings poverty to the house. Mahalakshmi Vrat in 2026 begins on the eighth day of the bright half of the Bhadrapada month and lasts for 16 days, starting on September 19, 2026, and ending on October 4, 2026.
