What are the sleeping timings for lower and middle berth passengers? Know the railway rules before you have to complain to the TTE..

Have you ever overheard heated arguments during a train journey—things like "Brother, please scoot over a bit" or "Hey, why keep the middle berth down during the day?" It is rare to find a traveler who hasn't encountered such squabbles while traveling by train.

While the views from the train window are delightful, arguments over seats inside the coach can often spoil the joy of the journey. Some passengers keep the middle berth lowered to sleep all day, while others place heavy suitcases on the upper berth, leaving passengers sitting below feeling anxious and unsafe.

To curb these daily disputes, Indian Railways has established clear rules regarding sleeping arrangements. If you want a peaceful journey free from such hassles, it is essential to be aware of these railway regulations.

**You Cannot Sleep Whenever You Please**
Indian Railways has designated specific sleeping hours to ensure passenger convenience and peace. According to the rules, the official sleeping time on the train is from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. This rule primarily applies to the lower and middle berths. Essentially, this means that during the day, you must share the lower berth with other passengers for sitting.

**What Are the Rules for the Upper Berth?**
If you hold a ticket for the upper berth, the rules are quite convenient for you:

*   **Freedom to Sleep During the Day:** Passengers with the upper berth are not restricted to sleeping only at night. If you wish, you can comfortably rest on your seat even during daylight hours.

*   **Must Return to Your Seat After 10 PM:** If you are enjoying the journey by sitting on the lower berth during the day, remember that you must return to your upper berth once it hits 10:00 PM. After this time, you are not permitted to sit or lie down on the lower berth. Avoid taking heavy luggage to the upper berth: Many passengers take heavy suitcases with them to the upper berth. According to the Railways, this can be extremely dangerous. Sudden braking or a jolt could cause heavy luggage to fall, potentially injuring passengers seated below. Therefore, carry only small or lightweight items with you when moving to the upper berth.

Be considerate of fellow passengers: Even though the upper berth is entirely yours, that does not mean you can inconvenience others. It is also your responsibility to adhere to all the rules.

Important points regarding the middle berth
Disputes regarding the middle berth are the most common on trains; hence, the Railways has clearly defined the rules for it:

Seat to be used only at night: You may use the middle berth for sleeping only between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

Must be folded down in the morning: The berth must be folded back down as soon as it turns 6:00 AM. This is necessary to allow passengers on the lower berth to sit comfortably in an upright position.

What to do if someone does not follow the rules?
If a passenger keeps the middle berth open during the day, you can calmly explain the railway rules and request them to fold it down. If the issue persists and causes you inconvenience, you can immediately report the matter to the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) or raise the issue on the official railway portal.
