WhatsApp continuously introduces new features to enhance user experience and privacy. As part of this effort, a "username" feature is currently being tested; this will allow you to connect with others using a specific name (username) while keeping your phone number hidden.

WhatsApp has started allowing users to reserve (book) their usernames under this feature. However, if you are creating a username, do not forget to enable the "username key" for added privacy. Let’s understand what this feature is and why it is important for you.
What is the WhatsApp Username Key?
The username key is essentially a 4-digit security code.
With the arrival of WhatsApp's new username feature, your phone number will remain secure.
If you set up a username key, strangers who know your username will not be able to message you directly.
To contact you, they would need to enter this 4-digit code along with your username.
Why is it important to enable it?
By default, Meta keeps the username key feature turned off.
If you do not enable it manually, any stranger could message you simply by entering your username, increasing the risk of spam or scams. Enabling the username key provides an extra layer of privacy, ensuring that only those to whom you provide the key can message you.
How do you set the WhatsApp Username Key?
Before enabling the username key, you must first reserve your username. Setting it up is very simple:
First, open WhatsApp on your smartphone.
Tap the three dots in the top-right corner and go to Settings.
Click on the 'Account' section and select the 'Username' option. If you haven't created a username yet, reserve your preferred username here first.
Next, click on the 'Contact me by username' option found below. Select "People who know my key" and click on "Username Key."
WhatsApp will then offer you a choice of specific codes; select the one you prefer and save it.
Important Note: You cannot simply set any 4-digit number of your choice. WhatsApp will provide you with a selection of secure codes, and you must choose one from them.
How to change the Username Key?
If you feel that too many people have become aware of your Key, you can change it at any time to maintain your privacy:
Go to Settings > Account > Username > Contact me by username > Username Key.
Click on "Get a different Key" located below the current Key.
WhatsApp will display a new code, which you can update by clicking "Save."

When will the feature become operational?
Currently, you can only reserve your username and Key. By the end of this year, when the feature goes live for everyone, this security layer will become fully functional, effectively eliminating unwanted contact from strangers.
