Why do lips turn dark from smoking cigarettes? How to restore their natural color..

Smoking is harmful to health in every respect. It carries risks ranging from cancer to skin pigmentation. This is why the lips of those who smoke cigarettes often become dark. Dr. Chandni Jain Gupta—a dermatologist and aesthetic physician (MBBS, MD) at Elantis Healthcare in New Delhi—explains that the primary reason for lips darkening due to smoking is an overproduction of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair, and lips.

When you smoke cigarettes frequently, the harmful substances they contain trigger an increase in melanin production in the skin. In medical terms, this is known as "smoker’s melanosis." It causes dark brown or grayish patches to appear on the lips, and sometimes even inside the mouth. A key factor in this discoloration is nicotine, a substance released when a cigarette burns. When the delicate tissues of the lips come into contact with it, they begin to darken. Furthermore, the heat generated by smoking can cause irritation and dryness in the lips.

The expert notes that long-term smoking introduces harmful carbon monoxide into the body, which reduces the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity and negatively affects the condition of the tissues. Additionally, smoking damages proteins such as collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining the skin's structure and elasticity. Consequently, the lips of smokers often appear dry, wrinkled, and prematurely aged.

The most effective way to restore the natural color of your lips is to quit smoking. Furthermore, there is no medicated lip balm, home remedy, or beauty treatment that can completely reverse the adverse effects of smoking on the lips. Quitting smoking will reduce lip irritation and pigment production, which will help improve the condition of your lips. However, the time it takes for the natural color to return varies from person to person, and there is no guarantee that the original lip color will be fully restored.

Moisturizing is the most essential aspect of lip care. Choose lip balms that contain ingredients such as petrolatum, shea butter, or ceramides. These components keep your lips moisturized, protect the skin barrier, and help maintain soft, healthy lips.

Through regular moisturizing, sun protection, a balanced diet, and proper care, you can gradually improve the color and texture of your lips. Incorporate foods rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and antioxidants into your diet, and ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. If the pigmentation does not improve even after quitting smoking and adopting a proper skincare routine, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist.
