Why does getting up early to exercise feel like a chore in the cold? These 5 smart tips will make your workout easier..

In winter, stepping out of a warm quilt into the chilly morning air feels like quite a challenge. Even after the alarm goes off, the urge to sleep a little longer is strong. Especially when temperatures are low, the body can feel sluggish and muscles somewhat stiff. This is why maintaining a daily morning exercise routine can seem difficult during the winter months.

However, this doesn't mean you should skip your workout. You simply need to adjust your approach to exercising during this season. If you activate your body gradually instead of jumping straight into intense exercise, a morning workout becomes much more manageable.

**Don't Exercise Immediately After Waking Up**
Dr. Rajkumar (AYUSH) explains that in winter, your body temperature may feel lower than usual right after waking up. Muscles do not activate immediately after you have been sleeping in one position for a long time. Consequently, diving straight into running, intense cardio, or heavy exercise can lead to problems. Therefore, it is essential to prepare your body first.

**1. Warm Up for 5–10 Minutes Before Your Workout**
Never skip your warm-up before exercising in the cold. You can walk around the room, move your limbs, do light stretching, spot jogging, or perform other simple movements. This helps the body gradually shift into an active mode and reduces muscle stiffness. The more comfortable and gentle the warm-up, the easier it will feel to start your workout.

**2. Avoid Intense Workouts Initially**
If you are starting a morning exercise routine in the cold for the first time, there is no need to overexert yourself right away. You can begin with 15–20 minutes of light exercise, a walk, or simple yoga. Give your body time to adjust to the weather. After a few days, you can increase the duration and intensity of your workout based on your capacity.

3. Wear appropriate clothing for your workout
It is important to pay attention to your clothing when exercising in cold weather. Working out directly in the cold air while wearing very thin clothes can make you feel uncomfortable. Conversely, wearing excessively thick clothing can cause you to overheat during exercise. Therefore, choose comfortable layers that can be added or removed as needed. If you are working out outdoors, it is also advisable to protect your head, ears, and hands from the cold air.

4. Don't put too much pressure on yourself right after waking up
Many people try to start their workout immediately after the morning alarm goes off. Doing this can feel even more difficult during winter. Allow your body a few minutes to adjust after waking up. Drink some water, walk around the room a bit, and then begin your warm-up. If your body feels very tired on a particular day, a light walk or some stretching might be sufficient. It is not necessary to do the same workout every day.

5. Change your workout time if necessary
If the morning temperature is very low and you find it difficult to exercise in the morning despite repeated attempts, it is perfectly fine to change your workout time. You can do yoga, go for a walk, or exercise later in the day when the weather is slightly warmer. The most important thing is to maintain the habit of exercising; skipping a workout simply because it cannot be done in the morning is not the right approach.
